General Update
Handspring™ is delighted to announce that you can now order the hot new Treo™ 180 communicator at Handspring.com. Some limitations apply, so read on, or visit Handspring for all the details.

There are currently three ways to purchase the Treo communicator:

Option #1: Buy Treo with Service Activation
Activate a Service Plan and Get the Treo Communicator for $399
We're offering plans from Cingular Wireless and VoiceStream Wireless so that you can conveniently purchase a Treo communicator and activate a GSM service plan right through Handspring.com. To find out if GSM coverage is available in your area, check out our plan locator.

Option #2: Buy Treo without Service Activation
Buy Treo without Service Activation for $549
If you already have a GSM service plan, you can buy the Treo communicator without a service plan for $549. GSM carriers in the United States include Cingular Wireless and VoiceStream Wireless. The Treo communicator will only work with a GSM service plan, so be sure to check with your carrier to confirm that it is on a GSM network. Orders placed without service activation are expected to ship within one to two weeks.

PLEASE NOTE: You may need to add additional data services to your current service plan in order to use the Treo communicator's email and web functions.

Option #3: VisorPhone Upgrade
Visor Phone Owners—Trade Up to Treo and Save $150 for a Limited Time
If you purchased a VisorPhone before February 9, 2002, we're offering you the special opportunity to trade up to the Treo communicator, keep your current phone number, and save $150 off the regular $549 price of Treo without service activation. Until March 3, 2002, you can get the new Treo communicator for just $399 without having to activate a new service plan or make any additional service commitments. Plus, you get to keep your VisorPhone!

Software Development
CardToolŽ Software Development Kit (SDK)
TokenWorks™ offers to application software developers an SDK for the CardToolŽ 3-track magnetic card reader. The SDK uses a custom library, which allows application designers to easily capture card data with a few simple commands. The library was specifically developed to facilitate rapid application development. The designer is freed to concentrate on developing code quickly. No need to learn a new complicated set of commands to access the hardware.

Event Handling
The design of the CardTool reader module takes full advantage of the Handspring extensions to the Palm OS by adding a unique application event handler to the Palm OS. This is where the data to/from the CardTool reader module is processed. The event handler processes all the details so an application need only send a read buffer command to get the buffered data from a valid card swipe. The library allows developers to read any or all three tracks of data and permits decoding of the most common forms of magnetic cards. The library also supports a raw data mode for dealing with custom encoding schemes.

SDK Contents
The SDK includes a CardTool reader module, 5 sample encoded magnetic stripe cards, a shared library, sample application source code, email technical support, quick start, user, and programmers' reference documentation. All the tools necessary to create, debug and distribute applications, including a Flash ROM updater program, are provided for the GNU development environment. The sample application, library, associated setup files and Flash ROM updater program are also provided for the CodeWarrior 8 environment. Support for additional development environments is planned for the 1st half of 2002.
